Distributed Computing

SMSurround takes advantage of networked distributed computing. In current form, two Linux workstations networked together via Ethernet served CD audio, digital sound effects, MIDI control, and automated mixing to a central control program. This central control program reads in pre-programmed shows, and provides the interface for the user to control them. In an eventual implementation of SMSurround, the interface to this control software will be entirely through a board, much like existing lighting boards on the market today. This will provide an interface that theatre techs will find much more intuitive, as it often makes more sense to deal with a board rather than clicking a mouse or hitting keys on a keyboard.
