Rice

Early 1994, I think...—db

The dreaded rice came from some guy in Texas (I don’t remember his name or address; maybe I’m just blotting out the bad memories). He was buying a keyboard by mail from Canister’s then-keyboardist Josh Brandt, and Josh threw in a copy of the Cold EP just for the hell of it.

The guy from Texas listened to the tape.

And he hated it.

Hoo boy, did he hate it.

He hated it so much that he cooked it into a big batch of curried rice, wrapped the whole steaming mess in a ziploc bag, and mailed it to us. No note of explanation, no other comments.

We, for our part, were pretty impressed with our big yellow plastic-wrapped review. We were going to keep it forever, but it started to smell (well, okay, smell worse), so we chucked it after a few weeks. But it’s still one of our favorite bits of feedback; the thought that anyone could react that strongly to our music was...um...well, actually pretty disturbing.

So that’s it.
